There’s Sting and there’s the Police–with good anthologies available for each. So the purpose of this collection is less than clear. Taken cold, it’s a patchy, half-way approach that asserts a dubious continuity between Sting’s solo work and the Police tracks that made him famous. In fact, it suggests that people want old Police songs chiefly because Sting is featured on them. Well, that’s not necessarily the case. Regardless, besides offering an update of “Roxanne,” this collection features a mini-album’s worth of top-flight Police hits and a similar selection of Sting tracks. For more of either, look elsewhere. –Gavin McNett

For over 30 years, the Persuasions have been making a cappella records that are both hip and timeless. Not to be confused with its hybrid, doo-wop, a cappella is that smooth-as-a-cool-breeze harmonizing, sans instrumentation, that filled the night air like smoke rings under a streetlamp. When you hear the sweet tenor of Joe Russell, the harmony of Jayotis Washington combined with the potent lead of Jerry Lawson and thunderous bass of Jimmy Hayes you will hear and feel the true sound of a cappella. And they still ain’t got no band!

Langgaard: Music Of The Spheres/Four Tone Pictures
March 12th, 2010
Admin Amazon.com
Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was the odd duck of Danish music. He remained doggedly Romantic at a time when Romanticism was out, and he had his own funny little experiments with music that noboby particularly liked. We owe a debt to Chandos and Danacord for keeping Langgaard’s music current. Music of the Spheres (1916-18) predates Gyorgy Ligeti by 50 years with its bright, pointillistic assertions and groups of ideas that evolve to their own inner logic. As demonstrated in Tonebilleder (Four Tone Pictures), Langgaard’s music has an openness that allows his tone clusters to expand, contract, or simply repeat (as Ligeti would do much later). Discover Langgaard. –Paul Cook

These works are dialogues of spontaneous creativity: flowering plants in an exotic musical garden. Each piece is an exploration, a venturing forth in to the unknown, alive to each harmony, motive, rhythm, and color. We press the “record” button, thrilled with the process of listening and responding, and often surprised at what we hear. Listeners tell us they appreciate this mystery: the music being born as they hear it, especially for their ears, influenced by their presence, and even by the way they listen. They say it sounds “fresh”.
Klaus’ last name–Liebetanz–inspired the title “Lovedance” as the name for this series of improvisational CDs, intended to span several years. By following the CDs in order–”First Release”, “Second Release”, etc., the listener will hear the evolution of our musical language through time. It is a fascinating challenge for us, one which we trust will equally fascinate our audience.
We have purposefully omitted titles, so as not to divert attention from the music.
Those legendary masters of improvisation, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and many others, left little record of their outpourings. In Beethoven’s case, observers reported that his improvisations were expressive and moving beyond even his compositions. Creator and performer were one.
We hope this project encourages a renaissance of concert improvisation, an opening of new vistas, and new challenges for performers and audiences alike.
