Drumming To Journey By

Album Description
A Continuous Drumming Atmosphere.

Stimulating Support For Journeying
With Gentle Call Back.

The compelling consciousness altering sounds on this CD are woven into an enticing rhythm produced by four traditionally crafted drums, a traditional ceremonial deer toe rattle, the resonant singing of two crystal bowls activated only by the sounds of the drums, and the distant whispering of an ancient calling chant.

These haunting sounds heighten your state of consciousness and allow you to easily move into the deep state of trance that is utilized in spirit journeying and other ceremonies and to hold this level of consciousness for as long as you choose.

Four widely toned single headed drums from the Native American traditions are used to create the resonate, energy stimulating harmonics complete with their own dynamic overtones and undertones. The rattle, too, is designed to alter consciousness.

Created in the ancient ceremonial tradition it generates harmonics within a specific range of frequencies that stimulate the human electromagnetic field and allow it to increase in intensity, thus shifting your state of awareness into conscious trance.

The voice bringing the ancient chanting from our ancestors further enhances and holds your trance and sends a request to all of Creation to help you understand and live in the beauty and joy of your Song: to fully live the truth of who you are.

The large crystal prayer bowls were present in the room as we recorded and began to resonate and sing with the drums of their own accord. They were never struck or sounded in any other way.

In the tradition of Domano and Chea Hetaka of the central eastern Andes spirit journey ceremonies are used to travel to different physical locations as well as to the many worlds of the spirits in order to encounter teachers and helpers, to learn how to better help others, and to gain greater understanding and healing within ourselves. The drumming and other sounds are an integral part of the ceremonies and are said to carry you: they become your sacred vehicle into the realms of the unknown.

Like Raffi, Hap Palmer is a musical ambassador to kids. Aiming for cultural diversity and/or sensitivity during the holidays on Holiday Magic, Palmer and, occasionally, a group of kids make their merry way through standards like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and remake “Jingle Bells” into “Jingle Song,” while visiting the Jewish “Chanukah, Oh Chanukah,” the Latino “Feliz Navidad,” and even the Hawaiian-flavored “Merry Hula.” Palmer and the adults do a wonderful “Caroling, Caroling,” but it’s the sing-alongs such as “The Angel Band” and others that will get families chiming in, too–and teach some important lessons at a time of year when not everyone is doing the tree and crèche thing. Recommended. –Martin Keller

Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons

Amazon.com
New York City’s Blonde Redhead developed a reputation as Sonic Youth imitators, because their sound originally depended on the same discordant guitar points and sexless machinelike rhythms. But over the course of five albums, they’ve grown out of that heady shadow. Incorporating sinister keyboards, conventional melodic guitar lines, and a stronger grasp of songwriting (“Melody of Certain Three,” among others, is hummable), Blonde Redhead is emerging from the underground rock world with a sound that mixes dissonant alt-rock (“For the Damaged”) with space-age pop grace (“Ballad of Lemons”) and orchestral ambitions (“Loved Despite Great Faults”). Mixed louder than the usual indie release, the atmospheric lead vocals of Kazu Makino bring the imagistic lyrics to the fore. “Hated Because of Great Qualities” builds into a teetering seesaw of notes while Makino admits, “It never meant a thing. So be it,” with Godardian detachment. Definitely one of the more noteworthy bands that have slowly been growing into a diverse and formidable act. –Rob O’Connor

One 2 One

Product Description
Hughes has carved out an impressive career in the contemporary jazz arena. His first two albums, Between Dusk and Dreaming and Under One Sky, firmly established him as one of the foremost guitarists and composers in the genre, perfectly blending his fluid and emotive guitar style into an exciting, melodic mix of Latin, Jazz and World Music compositions. After being picked as a winner in JAZZIZ Magazine’s “Guitars On Fire” competition his subsequent recordings Straight To You, One 2 One, Shakin Not Stirred and Along the Way have received critical acclaim and major radio air play from coast to coast. With his sizzling fret work and infectious compositions the media are accurate in saying: “Both a great artist and an accessible one. His passion is so obvious, intense and contagious, that his audience shares it. Brian has received the SOCAN/BMI “Jazz & Instrumental Composer of the Year” Award six times from 1997 to 2006 and the title track from Shakin Not Stirred was featured on an episode of HBO s Sex and the City . Immortal Egypt

Album Description
Following the glowing success of Eternal Egypt, a new light of inspiration has guided Thornton and Ramzy to work together again in a startling and innovative format. Thornton describes the the creation of the recording in this way…Amazon.com
This, the third pairing of Brit multi-instrumentalist Thornton and Egyptian percussionist Ramzy, further explores Middle Eastern dance motifs in a contemporary setting. Recording the basic tracks in the U.K., they went to Cairo and invited some of the top local musicians to collaborate. Flute, violin, ney, aud, rebala, and accordion flesh out these extended, ambient grooves in an evocative, textural tapestry aimed as much at the mind as at the feet. Reminiscent of Peter Gabriel’s film scoring, Immortal Egypt has, with all its participants, enough cultural pedigree to satisfy World Music fans and sonic construction to please the headphone listener, but is probably too gentle for dance clubs, except for the most subtle sashaying. –Derek Rath

Celtic Twilight, Vol. 4: Celtic Planet

Album Description
Celtic music. Indiana Sheila Chandra, os Canadenses Mychael & Jeff Danna, o Irland_s Davy Spillane, o Galego Carlos Nu-ez, Oysteins Sevag.Amazon.com
Fourth in the family of Celtic Twilight recordings, Celtic Planet is an ambitious, charming, and at times surprising collection of Celtic-inspired music from around the globe. Spain’s Celtic-cultured Galician region is represented by the band Fia Na Roca’s pipe on “Ou Sube a Terra ou Baixa O Ceo” and by flautist Carlos Nunez’s “Two Shores,” quite effectively combining Ry Cooder’s flavorful guitar playing with soaring flute melody and accordion. Indian singer Sheila Chandra’s “Lament of McCrimmon” from Roots and Wings is based on her mastery of drone tones, and “White Wings,” an elegant emotive piece utilizing a string quartet and bass recorder is contributed by Norwegian composer Oystein Sevag. Vocalist Kate Power and vocal ensemble Anuna offer more traditional Celtic balladry, and whistler Joanie Madden leads a group including noted accordionist John Whelan in an arrangement of “The Immigrant.” Roundly refreshing, Celtic Planet is sure to be enjoyed by those familiar and new to the series. –Paige La Grone

The Rough Guide to the Music of Hawaii

Album Description
The music of Hawaii combines traditional Polynesian influences with the hugely popular slack key and slide guitar styles. This Rough Guide spans several decades of Hawaiian music, featuring stunning vocal and guitar tracks from some of the island’s greatest masters

Artists include: Gabby Pahinui, Genoa Keawe, Sol Hoopii, King Benny Nawahi, Lena Machado, Sonny Chillingworth, Bob Broazman, George Helm and Kalama’s QuartetAmazon.com
For a chain of islands with such a small landmass, Hawaii has a remarkably diverse musical culture. And while the folks who compiled this set have decided to focus on the slack key and steel guitar parts of the tradition, they also offer a nice selection of the vocal styles as well. The singers include Alfred Apaka and Lena Machado, who sing in a smooth pop-influenced style, as well as earthier performers such as Elodia Kane and Genoa Keawe, who perform using the traditional falsetto technique. But most of the 20 tracks are devoted to the guitar. The steel guitarists include pioneering players such as Sol Hoopii, Tau Moe, and Benny Nawahi, who developed a startling blend of hot jazz and Hawaiian music in the 1920s, as well as modern players such as Bob Brozman, who are reviving the earlier styles. The music of the slack key guitarists, including Gabby Pahinui, Leonard Kwan, and Ray Kane, features some of the world’s most gorgeously melodic tunes. –Michael Simmons

Wild Muse

Amazon.com
Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah perennially straddle the lines between flamenco, jazz, Middle Eastern, and Afro-Latin music, deftly assimilating their influences and backed by superb four-piece bands. Wild Muse, their eighth studio album, is no exception, offering yet another splendid brew of Strunz & Farah-style Latin guitar music. The difference here is that while some recent albums were filled with fast tempos and dramatic winds, Muse focuses on simmering works that are as intense in a quieter fashion, like the beautifully romantic “Natural Flow.” “Zagros” and “El Faraon,” however, are more rambunctious, propelled by fiery guitar licks, dancing percussion, and the agile bouzouki playing of Danny Papakalos. As always, the nimble fingers of Strunz & Farah fly across their acoustic guitar frets as if it were oh so easy. Another bonus on Wild Muse is the bass work contributed by Carlitos Del Puerto; his sinuous licks deftly wind through the musical maze and add another layer to the complex compositions. –Bryan Reesman

The Pine Valley Cosmonauts Salute The Majesty of Bob Wills

Album Description
Join the PVC’s as they erect a worthy monument to one of the most versatile and beloved figures in all of American music. You get 19 Bob Wills nuggets that show the breadth of his musical magic, from C & W, to western swing, to jazz, to blues, and to all points in between. Bob Wills’ own daughter, Rosetta, has given their efforts her blessing as, “the best tribute to my father’s music I’ve ever heard.”Amazon.com
“Ahhh…” In case you couldn’t tell, that was a Willsian exhortation with an English accent. Jonboy Langford is at it again: This second PVC release follows Misery Loves Company, their take on Johnny Cash. Fans of the Mekons and Waco Brothers may be surprised at how relatively tame this tribute is–there are actual melodies, fluid improvisations, and, dare we say, sensitivity. By no means is this disappointing: Langford is smart enough to realize that by “playing it straight,” enough of his and his cohorts’ personal styles and influences will inevitably show through. Of special note are the peculiar dabbles of Mark Durante’s steel and the multi-instrumental talents of John Rice. Kindred spirits such as Robbie Fulks, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Alejandro Escovedo, and Neko Case join the fun (and it sounds like they had lots of fun) on a jolly album that offers enthusiasm, geniality, and simple, suitable respect for the King of Western Swing. –Marc Greilsamer
