Admin Gifts of the Angels

Steven Halpern has more than 60 recordings in circulation, including audio projects ostensibly designed to enhance memory, wealth, and weight loss. He even has his own trademarked slogan–the Halpern Effect(tm)! (Take that, Mozart.) Thus, it’s easy to view Halpern’s high-volume output since 1975 less as art and more like a commodity. Gifts of the Angels, a 68-minute compilation (sampling eight albums and adding two original pieces), offers a few nuggets that suggest Halpern’s music at times can stand on its own merits, detached from all of its deep-bliss, New Age pretensions. “Celestial Prophecy,” is a nicely detailed (which is not to say complex) excursion on solo piano that briefly stirs the senses, and the title track from Higher Ground is a delicate space-music standout. Meanwhile, the 1970s-flashback tonality of Halpern’s electric piano (one piece, “Earthrise,” can be traced to Halpern’s debut release, Spectrum Suite) dates several of the tracks included here. Nevertheless, the disc’s pace, which drifts deeper into the ether on each of the last five tracks, is nicely constructed for those aiming to nod off into a state of contented nothingness. –Terry Wood
Best of Silk Road

Admin Album Description
Best of Silk Road blends Kitaro’s influences from traditional Japanese music and the romantic Western tradition with serene and seductive arrangements, gentle melodies and combination of lush, majestic textures. This CD features a previously unreleased version of the ‘Theme for Silk Road’ as well as ‘Pray at Xian/Mercury’, which was recorded live in Xian, China during Kitaro’s 2002 Silk Road tour.Amazon.com
In 1980, few people knew about the Japanese synthesizer player named Kitaro. He’d released a few albums in Japan, but Silk Road was the album that put Kitaro on the map. Originally recorded as the soundtrack to a Japanese TV series about the trade route between Europe and China, Kitaro subsequently released it as a double LP. This disc contains some of the best themes from that recording as well as some other songs, including 1996’s “Flying Celestial Nymphs” and “Caravansary” featuring Yu-Xiao Guang’s delicately expressive lines performed on a native Chinese violin called the huquin. The Best of Silk Road concludes with two new pieces, “Pray at Xian/Mercury,” nearly 18 minutes in length. They feature Kitaro on Native flute playing over gentle arpeggiations. Although these pieces do become tiresome in their repetition, the Japanese composer’s melodic trade-offs with To-san on Chinese pipa are a serenely austere respite from Kitaro’s often overly lush orchestrations. –John Diliberto

Diolaim

Admin Album Description
14 vintage tracks by the beloved Irish act delving intotheir folk roots. Nearly an hour long, it includes ‘TwoSisters’, ‘Dulaman (Seaweed)’, ‘An Gabhar Ban’, ‘RincePhilib A’cheoil’, ‘Siuil A Run (Irish Love Song)’ and’Eleanor Plunkett’. 1998 Music Club release.Amazon.com
This collection takes the internationally known group back to their roots, drawing together the best of Clannad’s early recordings. Though not as commercial or pop-oriented as their later work–the instrumentation is all acoustic and there’s a definite Irish lilt to even the English lyrics–the smooth, deft touch that is a hallmark of Clannad’s style is definitely there. An Díolaim showcases their folk roots, but such songs as “Siuil a Run,” “Cumha Eoghain Rua Ui Neill,” and “By Chance It Was” hint at the direction they would later take–The Chieftains this ain’t. It is, however, a fine collection in its own right, showing very clearly the evolution of present-day Celtic-oriented music. –Genevieve Williams
