This version of the soundtrack to the hit musical is from the stage production, which ended rather differently than the movie: just about the entire cast (except for the backup singers) winds up as lunch for the hungry plant. As a result, this CD lacks the song “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space,” which was written for the film. Instead, the recording closes with “Don’t Feed the Plants,” which is much more in keeping with the spirit of the rest of the musical. Little Shop of Horrors explores a wide variety of musical styles, from the rhumba-inflected “Mushnik and Son” to the I’m-on-Broadway ballads “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly Seymour.” The most spirited numbers are those that feature the trio of backup singers, who perform on the title track, “Skid Row,” “Da-Doo,” “The Meek Shall Inherit,” and other numbers with considerable energy. The recording loses something if you haven’t actually seen the stage production, but hearing this CD will give you an excellent reason to do so. –Genevieve Williams

I’m sorry to those people who really loved the soundtrack but I did the show with some really great people and we could have wiped the floor with the Broadway people. The music is still great and I love the storyline but jeez, couldn’t they have cast the show better? Kim

Absolutely an amazing cd. We just started off a hard 5 months working on the play and we got to listen to this soundtrack. If you’ve ever seen the play or movie, or if you’ve seen neither, this cd is for you! Some songs are dark, and some are light. I LOVE this cd!

This is one of the best musicals of all time. The music, from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, is easily better than their work for Disney. The pop influence is great. While the soundtrack to the 1986 movie is more polished, this one has more of the raw feel of a Broadway show, as it should.

This cd I feel is a wonderful demonstration of off-Broadway’s talent although the girl who played Audrey she, for her character has too much of a breathy voice for my taste but you can tell she has a beautiful voice if she would just change her character’s voice she would just be the perfect Audrey. Speaking of Audreys, Audrey II was th emost perfect person for that part although it says the mean green “mother” from outer space that guy who portrayed the voice of Audrey II was wonderful I can’t think of another guy who would be more suited for that part. Overall I think you should buy this cd if you like broadway and musicals.
