This disc presents a range of emotive Renaissance compositions originally written by composers from France, England, Ireland, Netherlands, and Germany. These pieces reach directly into the emotional realm, bypassing constraints of time or culture; they are serene, joyful, and elegant.
All of the music is performed by Hans Christian (of the top-selling duo RASA) utilizing the cello, nyckelharpa, sarangi, harmonium, and percussion instruments. This creates a listening experience with an authentic feel that forgoes the use of modern influences such as synthesizers and added improvisation.
Review:
“An elegant offering of Renaissance music. The music is structured, yet whispers emotion. The mood evoked is one of classic beauty and grace.”

Disney’s Snow White, the world’s first animated musical feature (1937), is still a standard in the industry. Though 1930s recording technology was primitive by today’s standards, the Disney music studios have always used the available technology to its fullest, and this recording still stands up. The mature but hauntingly childlike Adriana Caselotti as Snow White is a unique vocal presence, and the songs include “Whistle While You Work,” “Heigh-Ho,” and “Some Day My Prince Will Come.” The score is nearly as great an accomplishment as the film itself. –John Sanchez

Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah perennially straddle the lines between flamenco, jazz, Middle Eastern, and Afro-Latin music, deftly assimilating their influences and backed by superb four-piece bands. Wild Muse, their eighth studio album, is no exception, offering yet another splendid brew of Strunz & Farah-style Latin guitar music. The difference here is that while some recent albums were filled with fast tempos and dramatic winds, Muse focuses on simmering works that are as intense in a quieter fashion, like the beautifully romantic “Natural Flow.” “Zagros” and “El Faraon,” however, are more rambunctious, propelled by fiery guitar licks, dancing percussion, and the agile bouzouki playing of Danny Papakalos. As always, the nimble fingers of Strunz & Farah fly across their acoustic guitar frets as if it were oh so easy. Another bonus on Wild Muse is the bass work contributed by Carlitos Del Puerto; his sinuous licks deftly wind through the musical maze and add another layer to the complex compositions. –Bryan Reesman

This record began in the dreams of master songmaker Utah Phillips. Kate and Jody were singing some special songs of his that no one had ever heard before. Sometimes dreams come true. The pure sound of Jody and Kate — two voices, two guitars — singing these stark and moving country songs is extraordinary. You’re not likely to hear music more real that this. In the turn of Utah’s phrases, in the dignity of Jody and Kate’s singing, there is something uplifting, urging us to take a closer look at each precious humble life. –Alan Senauke, from his liner notes
