Blue’s Clues – Story Time

Finally, parents will have something to pop in the VCR when their hopelessly addicted tots ask for a hit of the blue dog during one of the many hours it’s not actually playing on television. This 50-minute video contains two segments that touch on several traditional tales, but focus on “The Three Little Pigs” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” There’s a little Elvis humor for the adults, but most of the jokes are aimed squarely at the pre-K set, who are asked to help our rugby-shirted friend Steve discover his evasive cartoon dog’s favorite stories. With any luck, the video should buy you more than 50 minutes of peace as your child is likely to be inspired to engage his or her dog in porridge-portion comparisons or corner the cat behind the washing machine for a rousing game of “Little pig, little pig, let me come in.” –Kimberly Heinrichs

Blue’s Clues: Bluestock
Today we’re having our very own musical concert, right in our backyard! It’s a concert filled with lots of our favorite Blue’s Clues songs, and we have some exciting animated celebrity guests on hand to add to the festivities. Toni Braxton joins Tickety to sing the Planets Song, Macy Gray and Periwinkle sing The Dance Song, and we have a very special reggae Mailtime with Mailbox and India Arie. Throughout the concert, we play Blue’s Clues to figure out what song Blue is going to sing at the end of the concert. And it’s not just any kind of Blue’s Clues, today we’re finding musical clues and recording them with our Handy Dandy Kazoo! We sing Old MacDonald with Blue and all our celebrities before going to Blue’s Room to sing a very special rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star with some real live stars (who we learn are actually “glowing balls of gas”!). At the end, we reflect in Journal about how it feels to sing songs you love.

If the phrase “Blue scadoo, we can, too” means anything to you, and you know that salt and pepper are actually a married couple with French accents, you probably have a potential consumer of this 50-minute video residing in your household. During two 25-minute segments, our host Steve and his animated dog Blue together serve as a Martha Stewart for preschoolers by showing them how to make a stage-worthy sock puppet, bake a scrumptious banana cake, and mix yellow and red paint for that perfect shade of orange. Now the tricky part of owning this tape is that your child is going to want to sew, bake, and paint each time he or she watches this stimulating video. Are you prepared for such chaos? –Kimberly Heinrichs

As Steve gathers clues, we learn about several other animals and understand animal behavior, including movement and sound. An undersea submarine dive with Miss Gooddiver illustrates how fish use camouflage to protect themselves. In the other segment, Steve (and you, intrepid viewer) must find out what Blue wants to do today. We learn about baby animals and their relationships with their parents. Blue and Steve even have to take care of Baby Paprika. (Ages 2 to 6) –Doug Thomas
