West Side Story-The New Broadway Cast Recording

Album Description
From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Recently re-opening on Broadway to critical-acclaim, West Side Story is the masterwork of three theatrical luminaries: Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. This groundbreaking new production offers a bold new design that builds on the show’s raw power and emotion and takes on new life through the inspired idea of a bilingual album and production. The Bernstein and Sondheim score considered to be one of Broadway’s finest, features such classics as “Maria,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.” The musical that changed the face of American Theatre over half a century ago continues to do so, remaining as brilliant and relevant as ever.

It has been 50 years since the original West Side Story first reached Broadway. Now we have a new West Side Story, presently at the Palace Theater in New York, and a new cast recording that Sony released on June 2, 2009.

First let me say that the new recording is wonderful.

This is a great revival of an American classic. Both the vocals and orchestra are wonderful. I wasn’t sure about portions being rewritten in Spanish, but “I Feel Pretty” sounds beautiful – like it was supposed to be this way all along.

Wow! I wish I could return this cd. I thought the leads were weak. Matt Cavanagh pronounces his “A”’s like an “eh” he comes across as very nazal…toDEH the minutes seem like hours. Both leads seem to struggle and search for notes at times. Eventually the seem to find them and hold them….

I cant believe I am so disappointed in a cd that I was waiting for with such anticipation. I was hoping to see the show but I think I’ll wait for a bit and get 2-fers or TKTS. Spending $130 on seats…NOT!

I’m buying this today at Barnes and Noble (they have 3 bonus tracks, including “I Feel Pretty” in English) – I saw the 2009 Broadway revival twice (so far) and loved it – even Matt Cavenaugh!

This album is the first Broadway recording since the original cast over fifty years ago. We have the film version (with the two leads dubbed) and many studio recordings with disperate casts.

While far from perfect, I liked it more and more today as I played the recording for the first times. The 30-piece orchestra is thrilling. As usual, “A Boy Like That” is the standout song. The two lead are fine, even if they sound exactly what they are — Broadway performers — rather than people who are actually living the experiences they sing about.
